Caring for Your Timber Furniture
Most of our timber finishes are polyurethane, either water or solvents based. Polyurethane is a popularfinish used on various surfaces like wood, furniture, and floors. We’ve put together these simple steps to keep your timber looking its best:
Regular Dusting
Start by removing any loose dirt, dust, or debris from the surface using a soft cloth or a microfibre mop. This step will prevent scratches or abrasions when cleaning the polyurethane.
Gentle Cleaning Solution
Mix a mild cleaning solution by combining a few drops of dish soap with warm water in a bucket or spray bottle. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners or solvents as they can damage the polyurethane finish. (Important not to use alcohol based cleaners).
Damp Cleaning
Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the cleaning solution and wring out any excess liquid. Gently wipe down the polyurethane surface, making sure to avoid excessive moisture. Excess moisture can cause the finish to warp or peel.
Drying
After cleaning, wipe the surface with a clean and dry cloth to remove any remaining moisture. Make sure the surface is completely dry before placing any objects or furniture back on it to prevent water damage.
Regular Maintenance
To maintain the longevity of your polyurethane finish, it is essential to establish a regular cleaning routine. Dust the surface regularly and clean up any spills immediately to prevent stains or damage.
Avoid Excessive Heat & Sunlight
Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or high heat can cause polyurethane finishes to fade or yellow over time. Consider using curtains, blinds, or UV-protective coatings to minimise sun exposure.
Regular cleaning and maintenance is essential for keeping polyurethane surfaces in optimal condition. Use a mild cleaning solution, avoid harsh chemicals, and be gentle while wiping to prevent damage. Take precautions against excessive sunlight and heat, and address stains promptly for a long-lasting polyurethane finish.
